Over the course of the last year, the City of Bethlehem has had open dialogue with the city’s independent waste haulers and residence to collaboratively find solutions to the city’s garbage collection system. This dialogue has led the City to test a zoned pick up system, starting in South Bethlehem, where the majority of trash related complaints have being received. The City of Bethlehem truly feels that this is a step in the right direction to address this quality of life issue in our city.

Below is information outline for the Pilot Program:

Can I keep my current Hauler?

A.

Yes. Your hauler will stay the same unless you choose to change haulers. The South Side Pilot Program for the collection of solid waste is not a single hauler program. Garbage collection is restricted to Mondays and Tuesdays, and will not, affect which hauler you choose to use.

What is the Solid Waste Pilot Program?

A.

It is a joint program between the City of Bethlehem and the 24 independent haulers serving the city, which limits garbage pickup for residential customers south of the Lehigh River to Mondays and Tuesday.

When does the Solid Waste Pilot Program begin?

A.

The Program will begin October 5, 2015

What if there is inclement weather or holidays?

A.

Collection may occur on a Wednesday only if there is inclement weather or a holiday that prohibits collection on a Monday or Tuesday.

Why did The City of Bethlehem implement Pilot Program?

A.

The City received 7983 complaints over the course of the last 6 years. More than 57% relate to garbage issues on the Southside of Bethlehem. To address these issues, the City met with the independent hauler to figure out a way to address these issues. Some of these complaints are as follows: Cans out 7 days a week; Cans not being put out and garbage piling up; Cans on the block every night if the week.

How do I find out my collection day?

A.

If you haven’t already been contacted by your garbage hauler, please reach out to them to determine if your collection day is Monday or Tuesday.

Q.

What time can my hauler pick up my trash?

A.

Trash may be collected between the hours of 6am and 4pm. Residents can place cans out no earlier than 6pm the night prior to pick-up.

What if my Trash is not picked up, who do I call?

A.

Please continue to call your hauler. If this is an ongoing issue, feel free to call the Recycling Bureau at 610-865-7082.

What if I have Garbage complaints regarding stock piling?

A.

If the complaints are in the pilot program area, please call the recycling bureau. Anywhere else in the city, continue to call the Health Bureau at 610-865-7083.

What if my hauler is picking up trash on a day other than Monday & Tuesday?

A.

If after October 5, 2015, your trash is being collected on a day other than Monday or Tuesday, please contact the Recycling Bureau at 610-865-7082.

Will this affect who I can provide service to?

A.

No, the pilot program will only affect the days that you may pick up as a hauler, that being Mondays and Tuesdays in the areas south of the Lehigh River.

Does this affect my Commercial Customers?

A.

No, the pilot program is strictly a residential program.
