LETTER FROM THE FIRE COMMISSIONER
It is with considerable pride and in a most splendid tradition
that the Bethlehem Fire Department endeavors to protect the
lives and property of the citizens of Bethlehem from the adverse
effects of fire or exposure to dangerous emergency conditions,
with expedience and a stalwart commitment to helping others.
The Bethlehem Fire Department is headed Fire Commissioner
Kevin G. Moyzan, who is appointed by the Mayor with the consent
of City Council. The Fire Commissioner oversees 112 firefighters
located at five fire stations located throughout the City
of Bethlehem.
Deputy
Fire Commissioner Eugene Novak heads the Fire Prevention Bureau.
The Deputy Fire Commissioner is also appointed by the Mayor,
with the consent of City Council. Four full-time fire fighters
hold the ranks of inspector and perform routine fire prevention
inspections. The Fire Prevention Bureau enforces the BOCA
Fire Prevention Code and the National Fire Codes as listed
by NFPA, which is adopted by city ordinance.
Training is conducted under the supervision of the Training
Captain, Guy Elliott. Hazardous Materials training and incident
mitigation, is under the supervision of HazMat Captain Richard
Zimmerman. The City’s Emergency Management Agency Coordinator’s
position, falls under the responsibilities of Assistant Chief
Michael Sankovsky.
Line firefighters perform fire suppression activities and
other valuable life safety functions such as; hazardous materials
mitigation, river rescue, vehicle rescue and entrapments,
bomb disposal, and support of EMS services.
The Fire Department conducts fire safety programs which
include; home inspections, Important person sticker program,
free smoke detector program, quarterly safety programs for
health care workers, station tours, and various adult and
children fire prevention programs – including live drills
with the “Child Fire Safety House.”
